Have You ever heard of someone who has almost run across Canada with just one leg? or about a person who sacrificed himself to help people with cancer to raise awareness and financial funding for cancer research?
In this cruel and selfish world there are some gems of people, this man is one among them TERRY FOX- A Man Behind Marathon of Hope
This post is a tribute to the Great man TERRY
ONE MAN MARATHON FOR CANCER AWARENESS
It was a marathon aimed to collect 1Can$ from each citizen of Canada. He was running confidently with one prosthetic leg. His each step towards the destination revealed that physical challenge was not a barrier to run a marathon, only zeal spirit and passion needed. He embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research and treatment as he was a cancer victim. Thousands of People were lined to encourage and cheer him.
Terrance Stanley “Terry” Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist, was born on July 28, 1958, in Winnipeg. He was an enthusiastic athlete, playing soccer, rugby and baseball as a child. He was passionate towards basketball though he stood only five feet tall and a poor player at that time. Fox developed his stubborn dedication to whatever task he committed and thus he become a good player in basketball.
On November 12, 1976 when Fox was driving to his home, he met with an accident and was left with sore on right knee. He continuosly felt the pain and finally went to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of cancer that often starts near the knees. He was told that his leg had to be amputated, would require chemotherapy treatment, and that recent medical advances meant he had a 50-percent chance of survival.
With the help of an artificial leg, Fox was walking three weeks after the amputation.Doctors were impressed with Fox’s positive outlook, which contributed to his rapid recovery. He endured sixteen months of chemotherapy in the British Columbia Cancer Control Agency. There he felt pathetic by watching fellow cancer patients suffering and dying from the disease. After the treatment he wished to live his life in a way that would help others find courage.
The Marathon began on April 12, 1980. Fox filled a bottle of water from the Atlantic ocean and wished to pour into the Pacific Ocean upon completing his journey at Victoria, British Columbia. Throughout his run he was cheered by people and raised 24.7millionCan$. On September, during the marathon of hope, his health became worst and he was forced to end his run after 143 days and 5,373 kilometers. His cancer started spreading to his lungs. Again Fox suffered an adverse reaction in the treatment and finally died on 28th june, 1981.
Fox remains a prominent figure in Canadian folklore. His determination united the people to support his run and his memory inspires pride in all regions of the country. In commemoration of Fox an event called “Terry Fox run” is being held in various countries to raise funds for cancer treatment which was founded in 1981 by Isadore Sharp.
Once Fox stated that he would “conquer ” his disability, and promised to complete his run, even if he had to “crawl at the very last mile“. Even though he couldn’t complete his run, he showed that physical challenge can be conquered by mental strength and firm determination.
Positive thoughts, passion and clear destination can make anyone a real hero.
